SZ Exclusive "Rocky III" Photos

SZoner, Mike "Adnuk" Kunda sent in these photos and this story that goes along with it:

Craig, as I go through my many Stallone photos, I thought the Zoners would like these. Funny story to it. In 1986, my friend Joe had a first cousin named sharon. She was on a school trip in 1981 to the steps in Philly. They just happened to be filming Rocky 3 on this particular day and she took these pictures. She showed them to me back then. And here is the fummy part...11 years later I married her sister, Sue. Anyways I love the picture with Sly and the 2 tony's!

Merry Christmas Zoners!!!

Mike "Adnuk" Kunda

Thanks to Mike for taking the time to send in the photos! Also, I'd like to publicly thank Mike for his continued support of the SZ. - Craig

Rambo Makes Best Films List

Jeff Allard at ShockTilYouDrop.com lists his choices for Best & Worst Horror Films of 2008. Surprisingly, he places "Rambo" on the Best Film list! Here's his rationale:

Sylvester Stallone's return to one of his signature roles wasn't horror, of course, but Rambo is a film no genre fan can afford to ignore...

The Main Film is in the Top 5

Neil Brown, over at ScreenRant.com, recently had this to say about "The Expendables":

The main film on any true film fan’s calendar for 2009 has to be The Expendables. The Sylvester Stallone film co-starring Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Forrest Whitaker.

Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News spoke with Sly who revealed that UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture has joined the film’s line up. He also revealed that Lundgren and Li would indulge in some sort of fisticuffs.Come on Sly - get Arnold and Bruce involved - even if only in a brief cameo capacity.

Who could argue with that? And ScreenRant also pointed out that "The Expendables" was the Internet Movie Database's number five most searched movie of 2008! That's pretty impressive, especially considering that it wasn't announced until later in the year. - Craig

Rocky Scores Again

On December 19, 2008, AskMen.com reviewed "Rocky" and gave it an overall 98% rating. Even more impressive is that AskMen readers rated it with a 99% rating. Here are a few quotes:

(Rocky is)... the ultimate male icon who represents, in a completely unassuming manner, values that are dear to every man such as standing up for your girl and doing your best regardless of the circumstances.

Rocky won’t just move you; it’ll lift your spirit.

Sly as "The Wrestler"

Darren Aronofsky, director of the critically acclaimed "The Wrestler" is quoted as saying that Mickey Rourke was not his first choice for the starring role. In fact, Sylvester Stallone was one of his first choices. Aronofsky said, "I was thinking it'd be interesting to see him go back to the ring in some way because he's so good in the ring. Then he did 'Rocky Balboa,' the latest 'Rocky,' and it kinda ruled it out for me because it was about an older guy going back to the ring. There were enough connections there that I didn't want to go near it." You can read the full article here.

While it would have been very cool to see Sly in "The Wrestler," I think that the path he is on now is better. Sly is back to writing, directing and starring in his own projects. Plus, it allowed Mickey Rourke another opportunity to shine. This way fans get to see two actors doing what they do best! - Craig

Statham Praises Sly

Shawn Adler at the MTV Movie Blog caught up with Jason Statham long enough to ask a few questions about "The Expendables." Although Statham couldn't talk too much about the script he did say this: “Sly is someone I grew up watching on TV and on the movies. He’s a living legend. He’s one of the biggest action stars that Hollywood’s ever seen, the whole world’s ever seen. And so the chance for me to come all these years later and be working alongside Sly is just one of those like pinch-yourself moments... Rest assured... it’s going to be a kickass film.” You can read the full report here. - Craig

Rocky vs Rambo

A little over a year ago, I was contacted by Jake Kalish. He said that he was writing a book about imaginary fights and was looking for expert opinions. Jake wanted me to weigh in on the Rocky vs Rambo fight. So I did. Jake recently contacted me to let me know that a copy of the book, Santa vs Satan: The Official Compendium of Imaginary Fights would be coming my way and that a link to the StalloneZone was printed along with my commentary. Here's how I saw the fight:

  • "Rocky Balboa vs John Rambo. Its the battle of the ages (and no, not because they're, at this point, no longer spring chickens). Sylvester Stallone is brought in as the guest ref. There will be no judges as this is a fight to the finish. Rambo starts out fast and takes an early lead as he gives Rocky a beating that would kill most men... BUT... Rocky... never quits. In the later rounds Rocky made a comeback and looks to have Rambo beat. After twelve grueling rounds with both men bloody and bruised, Sylvester Stallone, in a SLY (groan) move, calls the fight a draw." - Craig Zablo

How did the other experts see the fight? Ari Voukydis went with Rocky in an upset, Graham Thompson said it was Rambo in an easy win, and Roger Barr gave the nod to Rambo. Jake Kalish says Rambo wins via split decision.

If you're wondering about the other fights in the book, there are some imaginative ones: Muhammad Ali vs Bruce Lee, Han Solo vs Indiana Jones, Donald Duck vs Daffy Duck, Michael Corleone vs Tony Montana, My Dad vs Your Dad, Captain Crunch vs Tony the Tiger. Each fight has expert opinions and then Jake gives us the "official" fight commentary and results.

The book reminds me of junior high kids wasting an afternoon deciding "who would win if..." [Not that there's anything wrong with that.] I do have to caution that sometimes the humor crosses the line of good taste, but if you can get past a few, "I can't believe he wrote that moments" you'll find plenty of chuckles as you drift back to junior high and think about "who would win if..."

Sly as The Dark Knight

Frank Miller, the genius behind such comic book classics as "Batman: Year One," "The Dark Knight Returns," "Sin City," and many other classic tales has been riding high on the success of movie adaptations of his work. Miller recently told a reporter that if "The Dark Knight Returns" was to make it to the big screen, he'd love to see Sylvester Stallone in the title role. Miller was quoted as saying, "I loved 'Rocky Balboa.' This wounded warrior, that's what Batman is in 'Dark Knight Returns'... Just that mouth of his, the scowl and the way it would look in a mask."

Of course this is just speculation on Miller's part. I can't imagine that Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" would be heading for the big screen at this point due to the fact that Christopher Nolan's version did so well. What would be cool though is for an animated "The Dark Knight Returns" be made using Miller's designs and story. Even if it wasn't done for theatrical release, as long as it wasn't geared down for little kids, it could work. And you know you'd love to hear Stallone's voice coming from The Dark Knight. This would be a great project for HBO or Showtime, or even FX.

PS - And, you just know I'd love to see Miller and Stallone working on any project!

More on the Cameo

In a very nice article at The Times of India, Sajid Nadiadwala, the producer of the Bollywood movie that will feature Sylvester Stallone in a cameo, says this about Sly:

  • “I couldn’t believe the research Stallone had done on Bollywood.

  • “I met him at his house and my designer Sabina Khan did his fittings there. We had problems with his size, so Stallone produced costumes he had worn in Rocky and Rambo, and we decided to let him wear his own suit for a sequence showing the Oscar Awards.”
